He was the son of a music teacher and grew up in a musical family. His father was a choir conductor, and his mother was a pianist. Brilioth's love for music began at an early age, and he started singing in choirs when he was just a child. Brilioth's musical education began at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm, where he studied singing and conducting. He later continued his studies in Vienna, Austria, where he trained with the famous Austrian tenor Julius Patzak. Brilioth's talent as a tenor was quickly recognized, and he made his debut as a soloist in 1963 at the Royal Opera in Stockholm. Brilioth's career as a tenor took off quickly, and he became one of the most sought-after tenors in Europe. He performed in many of the world's leading opera houses, including the Royal Opera House in London, the Metropolitan Opera in New York, and the Vienna State Opera. He was known for his powerful voice, his dramatic stage presence, and his ability to convey emotion through his singing. In addition to his work as a tenor, Brilioth was also an accomplished conductor. He conducted many of the world's leading orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the Vienna Philharmonic. He was known for his ability to bring out the best in the musicians he worked with and for his attention to detail. Brilioth's career was filled with many highlights, including his performance as Don Jose in Bizet's Carmen at the Royal Opera House in London in 1973. He also performed the role of Otello in Verdi's opera of the same name at the Metropolitan Opera in New York in 1978. Brilioth was also known for his performances of the works of Richard Wagner, and he performed in many of Wagner's operas, including Tristan und Isolde and Die Walkure. Brilioth received many awards and honors throughout his career. In 1974, he was awarded the Royal Swedish Academy of Music's Litteris et Artibus medal, which is given to individuals who have made significant contributions to the arts. He was also awarded the Order of the Polar Star, one of Sweden's highest honors, in 1989. Brilioth retired from performing in 1995 but continued to work as a conductor. He was the principal conductor of the Royal Swedish Opera from 1995 to 1998 and was also the principal conductor of the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra from 1997 to 2000. Brilioth passed away on December 22, 2016, at the age of 77. He was remembered as one of the greatest tenors of his generation and as a conductor who brought out the best in the musicians he worked with.
