Massimo Freccia was an Italian conductor and violinist who was born on August 13, 1906, in Turin, Italy. He was the son of a violinist and began playing the violin at a young age. He studied at the Turin Conservatory and later at the Accademia di Santa Cecilia in Rome. Freccia began his career as a violinist, playing in various orchestras in Italy. In 1931, he joined the Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano della RAI as a violinist and later became the orchestra's concertmaster. During this time, he also began conducting and made his debut as a conductor in 1940 with the Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano della RAI. In 1946, Freccia became the principal conductor of the Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano della RAI, a position he held until 1953. During his tenure, he conducted the orchestra in numerous concerts and recordings, including the first complete recording of Verdi's "Aida" in stereo. In 1953, Freccia was appointed the principal conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra, a position he held until 1957. During his time with the orchestra, he conducted numerous concerts and recordings, including the first complete recording of Tchaikovsky's "The Nutcracker" in stereo. Freccia also conducted many other orchestras throughout his career, including the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. He was known for his interpretations of the works of Verdi, Puccini, and Tchaikovsky. In addition to his work as a conductor, Freccia was also a respected violinist. He performed as a soloist with many orchestras, including the London Philharmonic Orchestra and the New York Philharmonic. Freccia received many awards and honors throughout his career. In 1957, he was awarded the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic. He was also awarded the Gold Medal of the Accademia di Santa Cecilia in Rome and the Gold Medal of the Accademia Filarmonica di Bologna. Freccia continued to conduct and perform until his death on January 16, 2004, in Rome, Italy. He was 97 years old.
