The Zurich Tonhalle Orchestra is a world-renowned classical music ensemble based in Zurich, Switzerland. Founded in 1868, the orchestra has a rich history of excellence in performance and has become one of the most respected orchestras in the world. The orchestra was founded by a group of music enthusiasts who wanted to establish a professional orchestra in Zurich. They named the orchestra after the Tonhalle concert hall, which was built in 1868 specifically for the orchestra's performances. The first conductor of the orchestra was Friedrich Hegar, who led the ensemble for 25 years. Over the years, the Zurich Tonhalle Orchestra has had many notable conductors, including Volkmar Andreae, who led the orchestra from 1906 to 1949, and Rudolf Kempe, who served as the orchestra's principal conductor from 1965 to 1972. Other notable conductors who have worked with the orchestra include David Zinman, Christoph Eschenbach, and Lionel Bringuier. The orchestra's current principal conductor is Paavo Järvi, who took over the position in 2019. In 2003, the orchestra was awarded the European Cultural Prize for Music, and in 2014, it was named the "Orchestra of the Year" by the Swiss Association of Musicians. In 2017, the orchestra embarked on a tour of Asia, performing in cities such as Tokyo, Seoul, and Shanghai. The orchestra was invited to perform at the opening ceremony of the games, and played Beethoven's Symphony No. 5 to a crowd of over 100,000 people. Another notable performance by the orchestra was its 2016 performance of Mahler's Symphony No. 8, also known as the "Symphony of a Thousand." The performance featured over 1,000 musicians, including eight choirs and soloists, and was conducted by David Zinman. The Zurich Tonhalle Orchestra has also been involved in many recordings over the years, and has won several awards for its recordings. In 2015, the orchestra's recording of Bruckner's Symphony No. 9, conducted by Bernard Haitink, won the Gramophone Award for Best Orchestral Recording.
