Schola Heidelberg is a renowned classical music ensemble based in Heidelberg, Germany. The group was founded in 1998 by Walter Nußbaum, a German conductor and musicologist, with the aim of promoting contemporary music and fostering young talent. The ensemble started as a small choir of 16 singers, but quickly grew in size and reputation. Today, Schola Heidelberg consists of a choir of 40 singers and a chamber orchestra of 20 musicians, all of whom are highly skilled and dedicated to their craft. One of the defining features of Schola Heidelberg is their commitment to contemporary music. The ensemble has premiered over 200 new works by composers from around the world, including Wolfgang Rihm, Hans Zender, and Helmut Lachenmann. They have also collaborated with many living composers, such as Arvo Pärt and György Kurtág, to bring their music to life. In addition to their work with contemporary music, Schola Heidelberg is also known for their performances of classical repertoire. They have performed works by Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, and many other great composers, often with a fresh and innovative approach that highlights the beauty and complexity of the music. And in 2012, they were awarded the Rheingau Music Prize for their contributions to the world of classical music.
