She was born in China in 1962 and began her musical journey at a young age. Her parents were both musicians, and they encouraged her to pursue music as a career. Xiao started playing the violin when she was just four years old. She showed a natural talent for music, and her parents recognized her potential. They enrolled her in the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing, where she studied under the guidance of Professor Lin Yaoji. At the age of 14, Xiao switched to the viola, which would become her primary instrument. She continued her studies at the Central Conservatory of Music and graduated with a Bachelor of Music degree in 1983. She then went on to pursue a Master of Music degree at the same institution. After completing her studies, Xiao began her professional career as a violist. She joined the China National Symphony Orchestra and became the principal violist in 1985. In 1991, Xiao moved to the United States to further her musical career. She enrolled in the Juilliard School in New York City and studied under the renowned violist Samuel Rhodes. She was the recipient of the William Schuman Prize for Outstanding Achievement and Leadership in Music, the Juilliard Viola Concerto Competition, and the Juilliard Chamber Music Competition.
