Role:EnsembleThe Grosses Wiener Rundfunkorchester, also known as the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra, is a renowned classical music ensemble based in Vienna, Austria. The orchestra was founded in 1969 as the orchestra of the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation (ORF) and has since become one of the most respected orchestras in Europe. The orchestra was established by the ORF as a way to promote classical music and to provide a platform for young musicians to showcase their talents. The first conductor of the orchestra was Milan Horvat, who led the ensemble until 1979. Under Horvat's leadership, the orchestra quickly gained a reputation for its high-quality performances and innovative programming. In 1979, the renowned conductor and composer Leif Segerstam took over as the principal conductor of the orchestra. Segerstam's tenure was marked by a series of successful tours and recordings, which helped to establish the orchestra as a major force in the classical music world. During this time, the orchestra also began to collaborate with some of the world's leading soloists and conductors, including Leonard Bernstein, Claudio Abbado, and Zubin Mehta. In 1991, the orchestra appointed Pinchas Steinberg as its principal conductor. Steinberg's tenure was marked by a series of critically acclaimed performances and recordings, including a highly praised recording of Mahler's Symphony No. 2. Under Steinberg's leadership, the orchestra also began to focus on contemporary music, commissioning new works from some of the world's leading composers. In 1998, the orchestra appointed Cornelius Meister as its principal conductor. Meister's tenure was marked by a series of successful tours and recordings, including a highly praised recording of Bruckner's Symphony No. 8. Under Meister's leadership, the orchestra also continued to focus on contemporary music, commissioning new works from composers such as Wolfgang Rihm and Friedrich Cerha. In addition to its regular concert series in Vienna, the Grosses Wiener Rundfunkorchester has also performed at some of the world's leading concert halls and festivals, including the Salzburg Festival, the Lucerne Festival, and the BBC Proms. The orchestra has also collaborated with some of the world's leading opera companies, including the Vienna State Opera and the Royal Opera House in London. Over the years, the Grosses Wiener Rundfunkorchester has received numerous awards and accolades for its performances and recordings. In 2005, the orchestra was awarded the Grand Prix du Disque for its recording of Mahler's Symphony No. 2. The orchestra has also been nominated for several Grammy Awards, including a nomination for Best Orchestral Performance in 2011. Today, the Grosses Wiener Rundfunkorchester continues to be one of the most respected and innovative orchestras in the world. Under the leadership of its current principal conductor, Marin Alsop, the orchestra continues to push the boundaries of classical music, commissioning new works and collaborating with some of the world's leading soloists and conductors. With its rich history and commitment to excellence, the Grosses Wiener Rundfunkorchester is sure to remain a major force in the classical music world for many years to come.More....
