He was born on September 22, 1947, in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Porcelijn grew up in a family of musicians, and his father was a conductor. He started playing the piano at a young age and later learned to play the violin and viola. Porcelijn's passion for music led him to pursue a career in the field. Porcelijn studied at the Amsterdam Conservatory, where he received his diploma in conducting. He also studied composition with Ton de Leeuw and later with Klaus Huber in Switzerland. Porcelijn's talent as a conductor was recognized early on in his career, and he was appointed as the conductor of the Netherlands Ballet Orchestra in 1978. Porcelijn's career as a conductor took off in the 1980s when he was appointed as the principal conductor of the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra in Australia. He held this position from 1987 to 1996 and was credited with transforming the orchestra into one of the finest in the country. During his tenure, Porcelijn conducted numerous concerts and recordings, including the complete symphonies of Beethoven and Mahler. His compositions have been performed by orchestras around the world, including the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra. Porcelijn has received numerous awards and honors throughout his career. In 1996, he was awarded the Order of Australia for his services to music. He has also been awarded the Dutch Music Prize, the highest honor for a musician in the Netherlands. In 2017, Porcelijn was awarded the prestigious Johannes Vermeer Award, which is given to artists who have made a significant contribution to Dutch culture.
