Born on March 27, 1950, in Jamshedpur, India, Zacharias grew up in Germany and began playing the piano at a young age. He studied at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Hanover, where he was taught by Karl Engel and later by Rosl Schmid. Zacharias made his debut as a pianist in 1973, performing with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Herbert von Karajan. This performance marked the beginning of a long and successful career as a soloist, chamber musician, and conductor. Over the years, Zacharias has performed with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic, and the Vienna Philharmonic.
