Born on April 16, 1942, in Castiglione dei Pepoli, a small town in the province of Bologna, Italy, Nucci grew up in a family of musicians. His father was a clarinetist, and his mother was a pianist. Nucci's love for music was evident from a young age, and he began singing in the church choir when he was just six years old. Nucci's musical education began at the Conservatory of Music in Bologna, where he studied under the guidance of Giuseppe Marchese. He made his operatic debut in 1967 at the Teatro Municipale in Reggio Emilia, Italy, as Figaro in Rossini's "The Barber of Seville."
