Göteborgs Symfoniker, also known as the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, is a classical music ensemble based in Gothenburg, Sweden. The orchestra was founded in 1905 and has since become one of the most renowned orchestras in Scandinavia. The founding of Göteborgs Symfoniker can be traced back to the early 20th century when a group of music enthusiasts in Gothenburg decided to form an orchestra. The first concert was held on December 5, 1905, under the direction of the orchestra's first conductor, Wilhelm Stenhammar. The concert was a success, and the orchestra continued to perform regularly, quickly gaining a reputation for its high-quality performances. Over the years, Göteborgs Symfoniker has had many notable conductors, including Sergiu Celibidache, Charles Dutoit, and Gustavo Dudamel. The current chief conductor is Santtu-Matias Rouvali, who took over the position in 2017. The orchestra has also had many notable members over the years, including the violinist Torsten Nilsson, who was a member of the orchestra for over 50 years and served as concertmaster for 35 years. Other notable members include the cellist Mats Lidström and the pianist Roland Pöntinen. Göteborgs Symfoniker has performed all over the world, including in Europe, Asia, and North America. The orchestra has also collaborated with many renowned soloists, including Yo-Yo Ma, Anne-Sophie Mutter, and Lang Lang. Göteborgs Symfoniker has also won many awards over the years, including the Gramophone Award for Best Orchestral Recording in 2012 for its recording of the music of Jean Sibelius.
