Born on July 26, 1943, in Vienna, Austria, Schmidl grew up in a family of musicians. His father was a violinist, and his mother was a pianist. Schmidl started playing the clarinet at the age of ten and quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument. Schmidl studied at the Vienna Academy of Music, where he was a student of Professor Leopold Wlach. He graduated with honors in 1963 and joined the Vienna State Opera Orchestra as a clarinetist. He quickly rose through the ranks and became the principal clarinetist of the orchestra in 1969, a position he held for over 30 years. During his time with the Vienna State Opera Orchestra, Schmidl also performed as a soloist and chamber musician. He collaborated with many renowned musicians, including Leonard Bernstein, Herbert von Karajan, and Claudio Abbado. He also performed with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, and the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. Schmidl's talent as a clarinetist was recognized early on in his career. In 1964, he won first prize at the International Music Competition in Geneva, Switzerland. He went on to win many other awards, including the Austrian Cross of Honor for Science and Art in 1999 and the Golden Medal of Honor of the City of Vienna in 2003. In addition to his career as a clarinetist, Schmidl is also a respected conductor. He has conducted many orchestras, including the Vienna State Opera Orchestra, the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra. He has also conducted opera productions at the Vienna State Opera, the Salzburg Festival, and the Metropolitan Opera in New York. One of Schmidl's most significant achievements as a conductor was his work on the production of Mozart's "The Magic Flute" at the Salzburg Festival in 2005. The production was highly acclaimed and received rave reviews from critics and audiences alike. Schmidl has also been a dedicated teacher throughout his career. He has taught at the Vienna Academy of Music and the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna.
