Wiener Philharmoniker
Artist Info

The Wiener Philharmoniker, also known as the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, is one of the world's most renowned classical music ensembles. Founded in 1842, the orchestra has a rich history of excellence in performance and has become a symbol of Austrian culture. The orchestra was founded by Otto Nicolai, a German composer and conductor who was living in Vienna at the time. Nicolai was inspired by the success of the London Philharmonic Orchestra and wanted to create a similar ensemble in Vienna. He gathered a group of musicians from the Vienna Court Opera and the Vienna Court Orchestra, and the Wiener Philharmoniker was born. The orchestra's early years were marked by financial struggles and a lack of recognition. However, the ensemble persevered and began to gain a reputation for excellence in performance. In 1877, the orchestra was invited to perform at the World Exhibition in Paris, which helped to establish its international reputation. Over the years, the Wiener Philharmoniker has been led by many notable conductors, including Gustav Mahler, Richard Strauss, and Herbert von Karajan. The orchestra has also collaborated with many famous soloists, including pianist Arthur Rubinstein and violinist Itzhak Perlman. One of the highlights of the Wiener Philharmoniker's history was its performance at the opening ceremony of the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City. The orchestra played the Olympic Hymn, which was composed by Greek composer Spyridon Samaras. The Wiener Philharmoniker has also received numerous awards and honors over the years. In 2008, the orchestra was awarded the Herbert von Karajan Music Prize, which recognizes outstanding achievements in classical music. The orchestra has also been awarded the Grammy Award for Best Orchestral Performance three times, in 2000, 2003, and 2014. Today, the Wiener Philharmoniker continues to be one of the world's most respected classical music ensembles. The orchestra performs regularly at the Vienna State Opera and the Salzburg Festival, and also tours extensively around the world. The ensemble's commitment to excellence in performance and its rich history make it a true treasure of the classical music world.
