In its early years, the orchestra was a small ensemble of just a few musicians, but it quickly grew in size and reputation. The orchestra's first major performance was in 1974, when it played at the opening ceremony of the Rovaniemi Art Museum. This performance was a great success, and it helped to establish the orchestra as a leading cultural institution in Lapland. Over the years, the Chamber Orchestra of Lapland has performed at many major venues and festivals around the world. Some of the highlights of the orchestra's career include performances at the Edinburgh International Festival, the Salzburg Festival, and the BBC Proms. The orchestra has also collaborated with many leading musicians and conductors, including Sir Neville Marriner, Maxim Vengerov, and Vladimir Ashkenazy. These collaborations have helped to raise the profile of the orchestra and to establish it as one of the leading classical music ensembles in Europe. In 1997, the orchestra was awarded the Finnish State Prize for Music, which is the highest honor that can be bestowed upon a Finnish musician or ensemble.
