Avanti! Chamber Orchestra is a Finnish classical music ensemble that was founded in 1983 by conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen and composer Magnus Lindberg. The ensemble is known for its innovative and experimental approach to classical music, and has gained international recognition for its performances and recordings. The founding members of Avanti! Chamber Orchestra were a group of young musicians who were interested in exploring new and unconventional approaches to classical music. They were inspired by the avant-garde movements of the 20th century, and sought to create a new kind of classical music that was both challenging and accessible to audiences. Under the leadership of Salonen and Lindberg, Avanti! Chamber Orchestra quickly gained a reputation for its innovative programming and dynamic performances. The ensemble's repertoire includes works by contemporary composers such as Lindberg, Kaija Saariaho, and John Adams, as well as classical works by composers such as Mozart, Beethoven, and Brahms. One of the highlights of Avanti! Chamber Orchestra's early career was its collaboration with the Finnish National Opera, which resulted in a critically acclaimed production of Lindberg's opera "Kraft". The ensemble also performed at the prestigious Salzburg Festival in 1987, where it received rave reviews for its performance of Saariaho's "Verblendungen". In the years that followed, Avanti! Chamber Orchestra continued to push the boundaries of classical music, experimenting with new forms and styles and collaborating with a wide range of artists and musicians. The ensemble has worked with jazz musicians, rock bands, and electronic music producers, and has even performed with circus performers and dancers. One of the most notable collaborations in Avanti! Chamber Orchestra's history was its partnership with the Kronos Quartet, which resulted in a series of concerts and recordings that showcased the ensemble's versatility and virtuosity. The ensemble has also worked with renowned conductors such as Simon Rattle, Daniel Barenboim, and Pierre Boulez. Over the years, Avanti! Chamber Orchestra has received numerous awards and accolades for its performances and recordings. The ensemble has won several Finnish Grammy Awards, as well as the prestigious Prix Italia for its recording of Saariaho's "Graal théâtre". The ensemble has also been recognized for its contributions to contemporary music, receiving the Pro Finlandia medal in 2003. Today, Avanti!
