Vocalconsort Berlin is a renowned classical music ensemble that specializes in performing vocal music from the Renaissance and Baroque periods. The group was founded in 2003 by conductor and countertenor Daniel Reuss, and has since become one of the most respected and sought-after vocal ensembles in the world. The birth of Vocalconsort Berlin can be traced back to Reuss's desire to create a group that would focus on the performance of early music, particularly the works of composers such as Johann Sebastian Bach, Claudio Monteverdi, and William Byrd. Reuss, who had previously worked with other vocal ensembles such as the RIAS Kammerchor and the Netherlands Chamber Choir, wanted to create a group that would be dedicated to exploring the rich and varied repertoire of early vocal music. To achieve this goal, Reuss assembled a group of talented singers from around the world, each with a deep knowledge and appreciation of early music. The ensemble's core members include sopranos Dorothee Mields and Maria Cristina Kiehr, altos Andreas Scholl and Robin Blaze, tenors Gerd Türk and Charles Daniels, and basses Stephan MacLeod and Peter Kooij. Together, these singers form a powerful and versatile ensemble that is capable of performing a wide range of vocal music with precision and passion. Since its founding, Vocalconsort Berlin has performed at some of the world's most prestigious concert halls and music festivals, including the Salzburg Festival, the Edinburgh International Festival, and the BBC Proms. The group has also collaborated with some of the most respected conductors and orchestras in the world, including Sir Simon Rattle and the Berlin Philharmonic, and has recorded numerous critically acclaimed albums for labels such as Harmonia Mundi and Deutsche Grammophon. One of the highlights of Vocalconsort Berlin's career was their performance of Bach's St. Matthew Passion at the 2010 Salzburg Festival. The performance, which was conducted by Reuss and featured the Berlin Philharmonic and a cast of world-class soloists, was widely praised for its emotional intensity and musical precision. The New York Times called it "a performance of rare beauty and power," while The Guardian described it as "a deeply moving and spiritually uplifting experience." Another notable performance by Vocalconsort Berlin was their 2014 concert at the Edinburgh International Festival, where they performed a program of music by Monteverdi and his contemporaries. The concert, which was broadcast live on BBC Radio 3, was praised for its "exquisite singing" and "impeccable musicianship" by The Scotsman. In addition to their live performances, Vocalconsort Berlin has also received numerous awards and accolades for their recordings. Their 2009 album of Bach's motets was awarded the Diapason d'Or de l'Année, while their 2012 recording of Monteverdi's Vespers was named one of the best classical albums of the year by The Guardian. Overall, Vocalconsort Berlin has established itself as one of the most important and influential vocal ensembles of our time. Through their passionate and insightful performances of early vocal music, they have helped to bring this rich and varied repertoire to a wider audience, and have inspired countless musicians and music lovers around the world.
