He was the youngest of three children born to a family of musicians. His father was a violinist, and his mother was a pianist. From a young age, Mayer showed a keen interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of four. Mayer's parents recognized his talent and encouraged him to pursue a career in music. He began taking piano lessons with his mother and later studied under several renowned pianists in Vienna. At the age of 12, Mayer made his debut performance at the Vienna Musikverein, one of the most prestigious concert halls in the world. Mayer's talent was quickly recognized, and he was awarded a scholarship to study at the Vienna Conservatory. He graduated with honors and went on to study at the Juilliard School in New York City. While at Juilliard, Mayer studied under some of the most renowned pianists of the time, including Vladimir Horowitz and Rudolf Serkin. Mayer's career took off in the 1970s, and he quickly became known for his virtuosic performances and his ability to interpret complex musical works. He performed with some of the world's most prestigious orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the Vienna Philharmonic. One of Mayer's most notable performances was his rendition of Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5, which he performed with the Vienna Philharmonic in 1985. The performance was hailed as a masterpiece, and Mayer was awarded the prestigious Grammy Award for Best Classical Performance. Mayer continued to perform and record throughout the 1990s and 2000s, and his recordings of works by Mozart, Beethoven, and Chopin are considered some of the finest interpretations of these works. He also collaborated with other musicians, including cellist Yo-Yo Ma and violinist Itzhak Perlman. In addition to his performances, Mayer was also a respected music educator. He taught at several universities, including the Juilliard School and the Vienna Conservatory.
