Allmänna Sången is a Swedish classical music choir that has been active for over 180 years. The choir was founded in 1830 by Lars Johan Hierta, a prominent Swedish journalist and politician, and has since become one of the most respected and renowned choirs in Sweden. The choir's name, Allmänna Sången, translates to "The General Song" in English, and reflects the choir's mission to promote the joy of singing and the beauty of choral music to the general public. Over the years, the choir has performed a wide range of music, from traditional Swedish folk songs to classical choral works by composers such as Bach, Mozart, and Brahms. Allmänna Sången has had a long and illustrious history, with many highlights and achievements over the years. One of the choir's most notable accomplishments was its performance at the opening ceremony of the 1912 Olympic Games in Stockholm. The choir performed the Swedish national anthem, "Du gamla, du fria," in front of a crowd of thousands, including King Gustav V of Sweden. In addition to its performance at the Olympic Games, Allmänna Sången has also performed at many other major events and venues throughout its history. The choir has performed at the Royal Palace in Stockholm, the Nobel Prize ceremony, and the opening of the Swedish parliament, among other prestigious events. In 1995, the choir was awarded the prestigious Johannes Norrby medal by the Swedish Choral Directors Association, in recognition of its outstanding contributions to the Swedish choral tradition. The choir has also won several international competitions, including the International Choral Competition in Arezzo, Italy, and the Florilège Vocal de Tours in France. Despite its long and storied history, Allmänna Sången has not been without its challenges. In the early 2000s, the choir faced financial difficulties and was forced to cut back on its activities. However, the choir was able to bounce back and has since regained its position as one of Sweden's premier choral ensembles. Today, Allmänna Sången continues to perform and record music, and remains a beloved institution in Swedish cultural life.
