One of the orchestra's most memorable performances took place in 1991, when it played a concert in Kiev's Independence Square to celebrate Ukraine's independence from the Soviet Union. The concert, which was attended by over 100,000 people, featured a program of patriotic music and was broadcast live on television. The National Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine has also been recognized for its exceptional musicianship and contributions to the classical music world. In 2005, the orchestra was awarded the title of "National Orchestra of Ukraine" by the Ukrainian government, in recognition of its cultural significance and achievements. The orchestra has also received numerous awards and accolades for its recordings, including a Grammy nomination for its recording of Shostakovich's Symphony No. 5.
