Born on May 5, 1972, in Helsinki, Finland, Kaappola showed an early interest in music and began singing in choirs at a young age. She studied at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, where she received her Bachelor of Music degree in 1996. Kaappola's career began to take off in the late 1990s, when she won several international singing competitions, including the Lappeenranta Singing Competition in 1997 and the Timo Mustakallio Competition in 1998. These victories led to engagements with major opera companies in Europe and the United States. One of Kaappola's early breakthrough performances was in the role of Lucia in Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor at the Finnish National Opera in 1999.
