The Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra (RSO Wien) is a renowned classical music ensemble based in Vienna, Austria. Founded in 1969, the orchestra has established itself as one of the leading orchestras in Europe, known for its exceptional performances and recordings of classical and contemporary music. The RSO Wien was originally established as the orchestra of the Austrian Radio, with the aim of providing high-quality music programming for radio broadcasts. The orchestra's founding conductor was Milan Horvat, who led the ensemble until 1979. Under Horvat's leadership, the RSO Wien quickly gained a reputation for its outstanding performances of Viennese classical music, particularly the works of Mozart, Beethoven, and Schubert. In 1979, the RSO Wien appointed its second conductor, Leif Segerstam, who continued to build on the orchestra's reputation for excellence. Segerstam expanded the orchestra's repertoire to include more contemporary music, and under his leadership, the RSO Wien became known for its innovative programming and collaborations with leading composers and soloists. In 1991, the RSO Wien appointed its third conductor, Dennis Russell Davies, who led the orchestra for over a decade. During his tenure, Davies continued to expand the orchestra's repertoire, with a particular focus on contemporary music. He also established the RSO Wien as a leading recording ensemble, with numerous critically acclaimed recordings of classical and contemporary music. In 2002, the RSO Wien appointed its current conductor, Cornelius Meister, who has continued to build on the orchestra's legacy of excellence. Meister has expanded the orchestra's international profile, with tours and performances in Europe, Asia, and the United States. He has also continued the orchestra's tradition of innovative programming, with a particular focus on contemporary music and collaborations with leading composers and soloists. The RSO Wien is comprised of over 100 musicians, including some of the most talented instrumentalists in Austria and beyond. The orchestra's principal players include violinist Rainer Honeck, cellist Franz Bartolomey, and clarinetist Ernst Ottensamer, among others. The orchestra also features a number of talented young musicians, who are mentored by the orchestra's more experienced players. Over the years, the RSO Wien has performed at some of the world's most prestigious concert halls and festivals, including the Vienna Musikverein, the Salzburg Festival, and the BBC Proms. The orchestra has also collaborated with some of the world's leading composers and soloists, including John Adams, Philip Glass, and Yo-Yo Ma. One of the highlights of the RSO Wien's history was its performance at the 2005 Salzburg Festival, where the orchestra performed a program of contemporary music by John Adams, Philip Glass, and Steve Reich. The performance was widely acclaimed by critics and audiences alike, and helped to establish the RSO Wien as a leading ensemble for contemporary music. The RSO Wien has also been recognized with numerous awards and accolades over the years. In 2010, the orchestra was awarded the Grand Prix du Disque for its recording of John Adams' "Doctor Atomic Symphony." The orchestra has also been nominated for several Grammy Awards, and has won numerous awards from the Austrian government and other organizations. In addition to its performances and recordings, the RSO Wien is also committed to music education and outreach.
