He was born on April 25, 1949, in Miami, Florida, and grew up in a family of musicians. His father was a professional trumpet player, and his mother was a pianist. Sam's musical journey began at an early age when he started playing the piano and the trumpet. However, it was the tuba that captured his heart and became his primary instrument. Sam's passion for music led him to pursue a degree in music education at the University of Miami. He later earned a master's degree in music performance from the New England Conservatory of Music. During his studies, Sam had the opportunity to learn from some of the most prominent musicians of his time, including Arnold Jacobs, Roger Bobo, and Harvey Phillips. Sam's talent as a tuba player quickly became evident, and he began to receive recognition for his exceptional skills. In 1973, he won the prestigious International Tuba and Euphonium Association's solo competition, which helped to launch his career as a soloist. He went on to perform with some of the world's leading orchestras, including the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic, and the London Symphony Orchestra. In addition to his work as a soloist, Sam was also a sought-after chamber musician. He was a founding member of the Empire Brass Quintet, which was formed in 1972. The group quickly gained a reputation for their innovative arrangements and virtuosic performances. They went on to record over 20 albums and perform in some of the world's most prestigious concert halls, including Carnegie Hall and the Royal Albert Hall. Sam's contributions to the world of music were not limited to his performances as a tuba player. He was also a dedicated teacher and mentor to countless students. He served on the faculties of several universities, including Arizona State University, Boston University, and the University of Miami. He was known for his innovative teaching methods and his ability to inspire his students to reach their full potential. Sam was also a prolific composer and arranger. He wrote music for a variety of ensembles, including brass quintets, wind ensembles, and orchestras. His compositions were known for their lyrical melodies and intricate harmonies. He also arranged music for the Empire Brass Quintet, which helped to expand the repertoire for brass quintets. Throughout his career, Sam received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to the world of music. In 1991, he was awarded the Harvard University Distinguished Service Award for his work as a teacher and mentor. He was also a recipient of the International Tuba and Euphonium Association's Lifetime Achievement Award and the Brass Band of Battle Creek's Outstanding Musician Award. Sadly, Sam's life was cut short when he passed away on April 5, 2019, at the age of 69. However, his legacy lives on through his music and the countless students he inspired throughout his career. Sam Pilafian was a true pioneer in the world of classical music, and his contributions will continue to inspire future generations of musicians.More....
