"Good King Wenceslas" is a popular Christmas carol that has been sung for centuries. The carol tells the story of a king who braves harsh winter weather to give alms to a poor peasant on the Feast of Stephen, which is celebrated on December 26th. The carol is based on the life of Saint Wenceslaus I, Duke of Bohemia, who lived in the 10th century. The exact date of the composition of "Good King Wenceslas" is unknown, but it is believed to have been written in the 19th century by John Mason Neale, an Anglican priest and hymn writer. The carol was first published in 1853 in Neale's collection "Carols for Christmas-tide." "Good King Wenceslas" has a simple melody that is easy to sing and remember. The carol is written in the key of G major and has a 4/4 time signature. The carol has four verses, each with four lines, and a chorus that is repeated after each verse. Where and what his dwelling?" Sire, he lives a good league hence Underneath the mountain Right against the forest fence By Saint Agnes' fountain. The fourth verse tells of the king's generosity: "Bring me flesh and bring me wine Bring me pine logs hither Thou and I will see him dine When we bear him thither." The chorus of the carol is: Therefore, Christian men, be sure Wealth or rank possessing Ye who now will bless the poor Shall yourselves find blessing.
