Born in Montreal, Canada in 1938, Silverman began playing the piano at the age of five and quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument. He studied with some of the most respected teachers in Canada, including Alberto Guerrero and Yvonne Hubert, and went on to earn degrees from the Juilliard School in New York and the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto. Silverman's career as a concert pianist began in the 1960s, when he won several prestigious competitions, including the Montreal International Piano Competition and the Busoni International Piano Competition in Italy. These early successes helped to establish him as a rising star in the classical music world, and he soon began performing with major orchestras and at major festivals around the world. One of Silverman's most notable performances came in 1971, when he played Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 4 with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Seiji Ozawa.
