Born on December 22, 1976, in Zagreb, Croatia, Markovina showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of five. Her parents, both musicians, recognized her talent and encouraged her to pursue a career in music. Markovina's early musical education was rigorous and comprehensive. She studied at the Music Academy in Zagreb, where she received a Bachelor's degree in piano performance. She then went on to study at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Hannover, Germany, where she earned a Master's degree in piano performance. During her studies, Markovina received numerous awards and scholarships, including the prestigious DAAD scholarship, which allowed her to study with renowned pianist and pedagogue Karl-Heinz Kämmerling. Markovina's career as a concert pianist began in earnest in the early 2000s. She quickly gained a reputation for her technical prowess and musical sensitivity, and was invited to perform at major concert halls and festivals around the world.
