The Aureole Trio is a classical music ensemble that has been captivating audiences with their unique sound and virtuosic performances for over three decades. The trio consists of flutist Marya Martin, violist Carol Cook, and harpist Sivan Magen. The ensemble has gained critical acclaim for their innovative programming and their ability to seamlessly blend the sounds of their respective instruments. The Aureole Trio was founded in 1982 by Marya Martin and Carol Cook. The two musicians had met while studying at the Juilliard School in New York City and had a shared passion for chamber music. They decided to form a trio with the goal of exploring the repertoire for flute, viola, and harp, which was relatively unexplored at the time. They were later joined by harpist Gretchen Van Hoesen, who was a member of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra at the time. The trio quickly gained a reputation for their innovative programming and their ability to bring new life to lesser-known works. They also commissioned new works from contemporary composers, including Ned Rorem, Joan Tower, and Paul Lansky. The trio's debut album, "Aureole," was released in 1985 and featured works by Debussy, Ravel, and Ibert. In 1990, Gretchen Van Hoesen left the trio to focus on her work with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. She was replaced by Sivan Magen, a young Israeli harpist who had recently graduated from the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance. Magen brought a fresh perspective to the ensemble and helped to expand their repertoire even further. Over the years, the Aureole Trio has performed at some of the world's most prestigious concert halls, including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, and the Kennedy Center. They have also been featured on numerous radio and television programs, including NPR's "Performance Today" and PBS's "Live from Lincoln Center." One of the highlights of the Aureole Trio's career was their performance at the 1993 inauguration of President Bill Clinton. The trio performed a piece by American composer John Williams, which was broadcast to millions of viewers around the world. The trio has also performed at the White House on several occasions, including a performance for President George W. Bush in 2006. The Aureole Trio has received numerous awards and accolades over the years. In 1995, they were awarded the Naumburg Chamber Music Award, which is one of the most prestigious awards for chamber music in the United States. They were also awarded the Chamber Music America/ASCAP Award for Adventurous Programming in 2003. In addition to their performances as a trio, the members of the Aureole Trio are also accomplished soloists and chamber musicians. Marya Martin has performed with some of the world's leading orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic and the London Symphony Orchestra. Carol Cook has performed with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and the New York Philharmonic. Sivan Magen has performed with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra and the New York City Ballet. The Aureole Trio continues to be one of the most respected and innovative chamber music ensembles in the world. They have inspired countless musicians and audiences with their unique sound and their commitment to exploring new repertoire. Their legacy will continue to be felt for generations to come.
