Vertavo String Quartet is a renowned classical music ensemble that has been captivating audiences with their exceptional performances for over three decades. The quartet was founded in 1984 in Norway by four talented musicians who shared a passion for chamber music. The founding members of the quartet were violinists Øyvor Volle and Berit Cardas, violist Henninge Landaas, and cellist Bjørg Lewis. The quartet's name, Vertavo, is a combination of the Norwegian words "vert" and "avo," which mean "host" and "grandmother," respectively. The name reflects the quartet's desire to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere for their audiences, much like a grandmother welcoming guests into her home. Vertavo String Quartet quickly gained recognition for their exceptional musicianship and unique sound. They have performed extensively throughout Europe, North America, and Asia, and have collaborated with some of the world's most renowned musicians and composers. The quartet's main members have remained the same since its founding, with the exception of Henninge Landaas, who retired in 2018 and was replaced by violinist Annabelle Meare. Øyvor Volle and Berit Cardas continue to play the violin, while Bjørg Lewis remains the cellist. Vertavo String Quartet has received numerous awards and accolades throughout their career. In 1988, they won first prize at the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation's Chamber Music Competition, which helped to launch their international career. They have also been awarded the prestigious Diapason d'Or and the Gramophone Award for their recordings. One of the quartet's most notable performances was their 2009 concert at the Wigmore Hall in London, which was hailed as a "triumph" by The Guardian. The quartet has also performed at major music festivals, including the Edinburgh International Festival, the Salzburg Festival, and the Bergen International Festival.
