He was the son of a poor family, and his father was a shoemaker. Despite the financial difficulties, de Lucia showed an early interest in music and began singing in church choirs at a young age. De Lucia's talent was recognized by a local music teacher, who offered him free lessons. He quickly developed his voice and began performing in local theaters and cafes. In 1885, he made his professional debut at the Teatro Bellini in Naples, singing the role of Alfredo in Verdi's La Traviata. De Lucia's performance was a huge success, and he soon became a sought-after tenor in Italy. He performed in many of the country's major opera houses, including La Scala in Milan and the Teatro San Carlo in Naples. In 1890, he made his debut at the Royal Opera House in London, singing the role of the Duke of Mantua in Verdi's Rigoletto.
