Artist Info
Elena Obraztsova was a renowned Russian mezzo-soprano and opera singer who was born on July 7, 1939, in Leningrad, Soviet Union (now St. Petersburg, Russia). She was the daughter of a military officer and a nurse. Her father died during World War II, and her mother raised her and her brother alone. Obraztsova showed an early interest in music and began singing in a children's choir at the age of five. She later studied at the Leningrad Conservatory, where she was trained by the famous Russian soprano Antonina Nezhdanova. Obraztsova made her professional debut in 1963 at the Maly Theatre in Leningrad, where she performed the role of Marina Mnishek in Mussorgsky's "Boris Godunov." Obraztsova quickly gained recognition for her powerful voice and dramatic stage presence. She became a regular performer at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, where she sang leading roles in operas such as "Carmen," "Aida," and "Don Carlos." She also performed at major opera houses around the world, including the Metropolitan Opera in New York, the Royal Opera House in London, and La Scala in Milan. One of Obraztsova's most memorable performances was her portrayal of the title character in Tchaikovsky's "Eugene Onegin" at the Bolshoi Theatre in 1976. Her performance was praised for its emotional depth and sensitivity, and it cemented her reputation as one of the greatest mezzo-sopranos of her time. Obraztsova was also known for her work as a concert singer, performing in recitals and with orchestras around the world. She was particularly renowned for her interpretations of Russian art songs and romances, and she recorded several albums of this repertoire. Throughout her career, Obraztsova received numerous awards and honors for her contributions to classical music. She was awarded the title of People's Artist of the USSR in 1976 and was later named a Hero of Socialist Labor, the highest civilian honor in the Soviet Union. She also received the Order of Lenin and the Order of the Red Banner of Labor. Obraztsova continued to perform and teach until her death on January 12, 2015, at the age of 75. She was remembered as a beloved and influential figure in the world of classical music, and her legacy continues to inspire new generations of singers and musicians.More....
