Harnoy's family moved to Toronto, Canada when she was ten years old, and it was there that she began to receive formal training in music. She studied with renowned cellist William Pleeth and later with Vladimir Orloff, both of whom recognized her exceptional talent and encouraged her to pursue a career in music. Harnoy made her professional debut at the age of 12, performing with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. She went on to win numerous competitions and awards, including the Young Concert Artists International Auditions in New York City in 1982, which launched her career in the United States. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Harnoy established herself as one of the leading cellists of her generation, performing with major orchestras around the world and recording a wide range of repertoire for RCA Victor Red Seal.
