The group was founded in 1949 as part of the Slovak Philharmonic Orchestra, and has since become one of the most respected choral groups in Europe. The Bratislava Philharmonic Chorus was established by the Slovak conductor Ladislav Slovák, who served as its first artistic director. The group was initially composed of amateur singers, but quickly gained a reputation for its high level of musicianship and professionalism. In 1950, the chorus made its debut performance with the Slovak Philharmonic Orchestra, and has been a regular collaborator with the orchestra ever since. Over the years, the Bratislava Philharmonic Chorus has performed a wide range of classical music repertoire, including works by Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms, and many others. The group has also premiered numerous works by contemporary composers, including Slovakian composers such as Ján Cikker, Eugen Suchoň, and Peter Machajdík. One of the highlights of the Bratislava Philharmonic Chorus' career was its performance of Verdi's Requiem in 1965, which was conducted by the legendary Italian conductor Carlo Maria Giulini. The performance was widely acclaimed and helped to establish the chorus as a major force in the classical music world. In addition to its collaborations with the Slovak Philharmonic Orchestra, the Bratislava Philharmonic Chorus has also worked with many other leading orchestras and conductors. The group has performed with the Vienna Philharmonic, the Berlin Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and many others. The chorus has also worked with conductors such as Claudio Abbado, Zubin Mehta, and Riccardo Muti. The Bratislava Philharmonic Chorus has received numerous awards and accolades over the years. In 1970, the group was awarded the title of "Laureate of the International Choral Competition" in Arezzo, Italy. The chorus has also been awarded the "Golden Plaque" by the Slovak Ministry of Culture, and has been recognized for its contributions to Slovakian culture by the Slovakian government. In addition to its performances and awards, the Bratislava Philharmonic Chorus has also made many recordings over the years. The group has recorded works by Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, and many others, as well as numerous Slovakian composers. The chorus' recordings have been released on many major classical music labels, including Deutsche Grammophon, Philips, and Supraphon. Today, the Bratislava Philharmonic Chorus continues to be a leading force in the classical music world.
