One of the highlights of Gitlis' career was his performance at the 1960 International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow. He was the first Israeli musician to participate in the competition, and he won the third prize. This was a significant achievement for Gitlis, as the competition was one of the most prestigious music competitions in the world at the time.
