He was born on August 22, 1926, in Vienna, Austria. His parents were both musicians, and they recognized his talent for music at an early age. Herbert began playing the piano when he was just four years old, and by the time he was six, he was already performing in public. Herbert's family moved to the United States in 1938 to escape the Nazi regime in Austria. They settled in New York City, where Herbert continued his music education. He studied at the Juilliard School of Music and the Manhattan School of Music, where he received his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in music. Herbert's talent as a pianist was recognized early on, and he began performing in public at a young age. He made his debut at Carnegie Hall in 1947, when he was just 21 years old. The performance was a huge success, and it marked the beginning of Herbert's career as a concert pianist.
