Born on May 22, 1924, in Stockholm, Sweden, Wahlund was the son of a music teacher and a pianist. Wahlund began his musical training at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm, where he studied under the tutelage of renowned pianist and composer, Hilding Rosenberg. He later continued his studies at the Juilliard School in New York City, where he studied with the legendary pianist, Rosina Lhévinne. In 1947, he won first prize in the prestigious Geneva International Music Competition, which launched his career as a concert pianist.
