Sten Wahlund was a renowned classical music artist who made significant contributions to the world of music. Born on May 22, 1924, in Stockholm, Sweden, Wahlund was the son of a music teacher and a pianist. His parents recognized his musical talent at an early age and encouraged him to pursue a career in music. Wahlund began his musical training at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm, where he studied under the tutelage of renowned pianist and composer, Hilding Rosenberg. He later continued his studies at the Juilliard School in New York City, where he studied with the legendary pianist, Rosina Lhévinne. Wahlund's talent as a pianist was evident from an early age, and he quickly gained recognition for his exceptional skills. In 1947, he won first prize in the prestigious Geneva International Music Competition, which launched his career as a concert pianist. Throughout his career, Wahlund performed extensively throughout Europe and the United States, earning critical acclaim for his performances. He was particularly renowned for his interpretations of the works of Beethoven, Chopin, and Schumann, and his performances of these composers' works were considered to be among the finest of his time. In addition to his career as a concert pianist, Wahlund was also a respected teacher and mentor to many young musicians. He taught at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm, the Juilliard School in New York City, and the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, where he served as a professor of piano for many years. Wahlund's contributions to the world of music were recognized with numerous awards and honors throughout his career. In 1953, he was awarded the Litteris et Artibus medal by the Swedish government in recognition of his contributions to the arts. He was also awarded the Royal Swedish Academy of Music's Medal of Honor in 1974, and the Order of the Polar Star in 1984. Despite his many accomplishments, Wahlund remained humble and dedicated to his craft throughout his life. He continued to perform and teach until his death on December 22, 1997, at the age of 73.
