He was the son of a Greek father and a Cypriot mother. His father was a lawyer and a music lover who introduced him to classical music at a young age. Economou showed an early talent for music and began playing the piano at the age of four. Economou's family moved to Athens, Greece, when he was six years old. He continued his piano studies with the renowned Greek pianist Gina Bachauer. At the age of 12, he won first prize in the Greek National Piano Competition. He went on to study at the Athens Conservatory and later at the Juilliard School in New York City. Economou made his debut as a pianist in 1973 at the Athens Concert Hall. He quickly gained recognition for his virtuosity and musicality. He performed with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the New York Philharmonic. He also collaborated with many of the world's leading conductors, including Herbert von Karajan, Leonard Bernstein, and Claudio Abbado. Economou was known for his interpretations of the music of Beethoven, Chopin, and Liszt. He was also a champion of contemporary music and premiered works by many of the leading composers of his time, including Luciano Berio, György Ligeti, and Krzysztof Penderecki. In addition to his career as a pianist, Economou was also a composer. He wrote music for piano, chamber ensembles, and orchestra. His compositions were influenced by his Greek heritage and often incorporated elements of Greek folk music. Economou's career was cut short by his untimely death at the age of 44. He died on March 7, 1998, in Athens, Greece, from complications related to AIDS. His death was a great loss to the world of classical music. Throughout his career, Economou received many awards and honors. He was awarded the Grand Prix du Disque for his recording of Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 4 with the Berlin Philharmonic. He was also awarded the Diapason d'Or for his recording of Chopin's complete works for piano and orchestra. In 1997, he was awarded the Order of Merit by the President of Cyprus for his contributions to the arts. Economou's legacy lives on through his recordings and compositions. He was a true artist who brought passion and intensity to his performances. He will always be remembered as one of the great pianists of his generation.More....
