The trio consists of Annalee Patipatanakoon on violin, Roman Borys on cello, and Jamie Parker on piano. They have been praised for their technical virtuosity, musical sensitivity, and innovative programming. The Gryphon Trio was formed in 1993 when the three musicians were studying at the Banff Centre for the Arts in Alberta, Canada. They quickly discovered a shared passion for chamber music and decided to form a trio. They named themselves after the mythical creature that is part lion, part eagle, and part serpent, symbolizing their desire to combine strength, grace, and agility in their music-making. The trio's early years were marked by a series of successes that helped establish them as one of Canada's premier classical ensembles. In 1996, they won the prestigious Young Concert Artists International Auditions in New York City, which led to numerous concert engagements in North America and Europe. They also won the Banff International String Quartet Competition in 1998, which helped them gain recognition as one of the world's top chamber ensembles. Since then, the Gryphon Trio has performed in major concert halls and festivals around the world, including Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the Edinburgh International Festival. They have collaborated with many of the world's leading musicians, including soprano Patricia O'Callaghan, clarinetist James Campbell, and the St. Lawrence String Quartet. One of the highlights of the Gryphon Trio's career was their performance at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics. They were chosen to represent Canada at the Cultural Olympiad, a series of arts events that ran alongside the games. They performed a program of Canadian music that included works by R. Murray Schafer, John Burge, and Christos Hatzis. The performance was broadcast to millions of viewers around the world and helped showcase the trio's talent to a global audience. The Gryphon Trio has also been recognized for their recordings, which have received critical acclaim and numerous awards. They have recorded over 20 albums, including several that feature Canadian composers. Their recording of Beethoven's Piano Trios won a Juno Award, Canada's top music prize, in 2012. They have also won several other Juno Awards, as well as a Grammy nomination for their recording of works by Canadian composer Vincent Ho. In addition to their performing and recording activities, the Gryphon Trio is committed to music education and outreach. They have conducted masterclasses and workshops for young musicians around the world, and have been involved in several educational initiatives in Canada. They are also the founders and artistic directors of the Ottawa Chamberfest, one of Canada's largest and most prestigious chamber music festivals. The Gryphon Trio's repertoire is diverse and eclectic, ranging from classical masterpieces to contemporary works. They are known for their innovative programming, which often combines works from different eras and styles. They have commissioned and premiered many new works by Canadian and international composers, including Andrew Staniland, Alexina Louie, and Osvaldo Golijov. Overall, the Gryphon Trio has established themselves as one of the world's leading classical ensembles, known for their technical excellence, musical sensitivity, and innovative programming.More....
