The Kohon String Quartet is a renowned classical music ensemble that has been captivating audiences with their exceptional performances for over three decades. The quartet was founded in 1986 by four talented musicians who shared a passion for chamber music and a desire to create a unique sound that would set them apart from other ensembles. The founding members of the Kohon String Quartet were violinists Joel Smirnoff and Ronald Copes, violist Samuel Rhodes, and cellist Joel Krosnick. All four musicians were accomplished performers in their own right, having studied at some of the most prestigious music schools in the world, including the Juilliard School and the Curtis Institute of Music. The quartet's name is a tribute to their mentor, Felix Galimir, who was a renowned violinist and chamber music coach. Galimir was known for his emphasis on the importance of communication and collaboration among musicians, and the Kohon String Quartet has carried on this tradition by placing a strong emphasis on teamwork and mutual respect. From the very beginning, the Kohon String Quartet was committed to exploring a wide range of repertoire, from the classical works of Haydn and Mozart to the contemporary compositions of Elliott Carter and György Ligeti. Their dedication to innovation and experimentation has earned them a reputation as one of the most versatile and dynamic ensembles in the world of classical music. One of the highlights of the Kohon String Quartet's career was their performance of the complete Beethoven string quartets at the 92nd Street Y in New York City. This monumental undertaking took place over the course of two seasons and was widely acclaimed as a triumph of musicianship and artistry. In addition to their performances, the Kohon String Quartet has also been recognized for their recordings. They have released numerous albums on the Bridge Records label, including a critically acclaimed recording of the complete string quartets of Elliott Carter. Throughout their career, the Kohon String Quartet has received numerous awards and accolades for their contributions to the world of classical music. They have been honored with the Avery Fisher Prize, the Naumburg Chamber Music Award, and the Chamber Music America Lifetime Achievement Award, among others.
