Vardo Rumessen was a renowned Estonian pianist and musicologist who was born on August 22, 1932, in Tallinn, Estonia. He was born into a family of musicians, and his father was a well-known composer and conductor. From a young age, Vardo showed a keen interest in music, and his parents encouraged him to pursue his passion. Vardo began his piano studies at the Tallinn Music School, where he was taught by the renowned pianist and pedagogue, Bruno Lukk. He later continued his studies at the Moscow Conservatory, where he studied under the tutelage of the legendary pianist, Emil Gilels. Vardo's time in Moscow was a formative period in his life, and he was greatly influenced by the Russian school of piano playing. After completing his studies, Vardo returned to Estonia, where he began his career as a concert pianist. He quickly gained a reputation as one of the finest pianists in the country, and his performances were highly acclaimed by audiences and critics alike. He was particularly noted for his interpretations of the works of Beethoven, Chopin, and Schumann. In addition to his career as a performer, Vardo was also a respected musicologist. He was particularly interested in the music of his native Estonia, and he conducted extensive research into the country's musical heritage. He was also a prolific writer, and his articles and essays on music were widely read and highly regarded. Throughout his career, Vardo performed extensively both in Estonia and abroad. He made numerous recordings, and his performances were broadcast on radio and television.
