Born on December 27, 1948, in Havana, Cuba, Gutiérrez showed an early aptitude for music and began studying piano at the age of six. His parents, both of whom were musicians, recognized his talent and encouraged him to pursue a career in music. Gutiérrez's early training took place at the National Conservatory of Music in Havana, where he studied with the renowned pianist and pedagogue Margot Rojas. He quickly distinguished himself as a prodigious talent, winning numerous competitions and earning the admiration of his peers and teachers. In 1961, when Gutiérrez was just 12 years old, his family fled Cuba in the wake of the Cuban Revolution and settled in Miami, Florida. Despite the upheaval of his family's move to the United States, Gutiérrez continued to pursue his musical studies with dedication and passion. He enrolled at the Juilliard School in New York City, where he studied with the legendary pianist and teacher Rosina Lhévinne. Under Lhévinne's tutelage, Gutiérrez honed his technique and developed a deep understanding of the nuances of classical music. Gutiérrez's talent and hard work paid off in 1969, when he won the prestigious Leventritt Competition, one of the most prestigious music competitions in the world. The win catapulted him to international fame and established him as one of the most promising young pianists of his generation. Over the next several decades, Gutiérrez continued to build his reputation as a world-class pianist, performing with major orchestras and conductors around the globe. He made his debut with the New York Philharmonic in 1970, playing Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1 under the baton of Leonard Bernstein. The performance was a triumph, earning Gutiérrez rave reviews and cementing his status as a rising star in the classical music world. In the years that followed, Gutiérrez continued to dazzle audiences with his virtuosic playing and deep musicality. He performed with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the Berlin Philharmonic. He also collaborated with some of the most celebrated conductors of his time, including Claudio Abbado, Zubin Mehta, and Seiji Ozawa. Throughout his career, Gutiérrez has been known for his passionate and deeply expressive playing. He has a particular affinity for the music of the Romantic era, and his performances of works by composers such as Chopin, Liszt, and Rachmaninoff are widely regarded as some of the finest interpretations of these pieces ever recorded. In addition to his work as a performer, Gutiérrez has also been a dedicated teacher and mentor to young musicians. He has served on the faculty of several prestigious music schools, including the Manhattan School of Music and the University of Miami, and has given masterclasses and workshops around the world. Gutiérrez's many accomplishments have earned him numerous awards and honors over the course of his career. In addition to his Leventritt win, he has received the Avery Fisher Prize, the Order of Cultural Merit from the government of Brazil, and the Hispanic Heritage Award for the Arts. He has also been inducted into the American Classical Music Hall of Fame and the Latin Songwriters Hall of Fame.More....
