Ludwig van Beethoven composed his "Sonatas (2) for cello & piano, Op. 102" in 1815, towards the end of his middle period. The two sonatas were premiered in Vienna in 1817, with Beethoven himself playing the piano part and the cellist Joseph Linke. The first sonata in C major, Op. 102, No. 1, consists of four movements. The second movement, Adagio con molto sentimento d'affetto, is a slow and expressive movement that features a beautiful cello melody. The third movement, Allegro - Allegro fugato, is a scherzo and fugue that displays Beethoven's mastery of counterpoint. The final movement, Allegro, is a rondo that brings the sonata to a joyful and exuberant conclusion.
