Heinrich Schütz's 'Zion spricht, der Herr hat mich verlassen, SWV 46 (Op. 2/25)' is a sacred vocal work composed in the early 17th century. The piece is part of Schütz's collection of works known as the Symphoniae Sacrae, which were composed during his time as Kapellmeister in Dresden. The composition is based on Psalm 22, which is a lamentation of the Israelites during their exile in Babylon. The text is sung in German and is divided into three movements. The first movement begins with the words "Zion spricht, der Herr hat mich verlassen" (Zion speaks, the Lord has forsaken me) and is a solo aria for bass voice. The second movement is a duet for soprano and alto voices, with the text "Siehe, das ist Gottes Lamm" (Behold, this is the Lamb of God). The final movement is a chorus with the text "Mein Gott, ich schreie Tag und Nacht" (My God, I cry day and night). The first movement is characterized by its mournful and dissonant harmonies, which reflect the despair of the text. The second movement is more hopeful, with a lighter and more joyful melody. The final movement returns to the mournful tone of the first, with the chorus singing in a homophonic texture. 'Zion spricht, der Herr hat mich verlassen' was premiered in Dresden in 1629 and is considered one of Schütz's most important works. It showcases his mastery of the Baroque style and his ability to convey complex emotions through music. The piece has since become a staple of the choral repertoire and is still performed and recorded today.
