As Três Marias (The Three Marias) is a suite for piano composed by Heitor Villa-Lobos in 1939. The piece was dedicated to the pianist Magdalena Tagliaferro, who premiered it in Rio de Janeiro in 1940. The suite consists of three movements, each named after a different Maria: Maria Chica, Maria Fulô, and Maria Benta. The first movement, Maria Chica, is a lively and rhythmic dance in 6/8 time. It features syncopated rhythms and playful melodies that evoke the spirit of Brazilian folk music. The second movement, Maria Fulô, is a slower and more contemplative piece. It begins with a haunting melody played in the upper register of the piano, accompanied by a simple chord progression in the left hand. The melody is then repeated in a lower register, with added embellishments and variations. The movement builds to a climax before returning to the original melody. The final movement, Maria Benta, is a fast and energetic dance in 2/4 time. It features complex rhythms and virtuosic piano writing, with rapid runs and arpeggios that showcase the pianist's technical skill. The movement ends with a flourish, bringing the suite to a thrilling conclusion. As Três Marias is a quintessentially Brazilian work, incorporating elements of folk music and dance into a classical form. Villa-Lobos was a master of blending these two traditions, and this suite is a prime example of his unique style. The piece is challenging for the pianist, requiring both technical skill and a deep understanding of Brazilian rhythms and melodies.
