Didone Abbandonata is an opera seria in three acts composed by Johann Adolf Hasse. The libretto was written by Pietro Metastasio and was first performed in Venice in 1742. The opera tells the story of Dido, the Queen of Carthage, who falls in love with Aeneas, a Trojan prince. However, Aeneas is called back to his homeland by the gods, leaving Dido heartbroken and abandoned. The first act of the opera opens with Dido lamenting her loneliness and longing for love. Aeneas arrives in Carthage, seeking refuge from a storm, and is welcomed by Dido. The two fall in love and sing a duet expressing their feelings for each other. However, Aeneas is reminded of his duty to his homeland and decides to leave Carthage. Dido is devastated by his departure and sings a heart-wrenching aria expressing her pain. In the second act, Aeneas is visited by the ghost of his father, who urges him to fulfill his destiny and found a new city in Italy. Aeneas decides to leave Carthage, despite Dido's pleas for him to stay. Dido is consumed by grief and sings a powerful aria expressing her anger and despair. The final act of the opera sees Dido preparing to take her own life. She sings a haunting aria, bidding farewell to life and love. Aeneas returns to Carthage, but it is too late. Dido has already taken her own life. The opera ends with a chorus mourning the loss of the Queen of Carthage. Didone Abbandonata is characterized by its beautiful melodies, expressive arias, and dramatic recitatives. Hasse's music perfectly captures the emotions of the characters, from Dido's longing for love to Aeneas' sense of duty. The opera was a huge success when it premiered in Venice and went on to be performed throughout Europe. It remains a beloved work of the opera seria genre to this day.
