Charles Villiers Stanford's Morning Service in C major, Op. 115, was composed in 1909 and premiered at St. Paul's Cathedral in London on June 6th of the same year. The work is a setting of the Anglican morning service, also known as Matins, and consists of five movements: Venite, Te Deum, Benedictus, Jubilate, and Creed. The Venite, which serves as an invitation to worship, is set in a lively and joyful manner, with the choir and organ alternating between antiphonal sections. The Te Deum, a hymn of praise, is grand and majestic, with the choir and organ building to a triumphant climax. The Benedictus, a hymn of thanksgiving, is more subdued, with a solo quartet singing the opening lines before the full choir joins in. The Jubilate, a psalm of rejoicing, is lively and energetic, with the choir and organ trading off in a call-and-response style. The Creed, a statement of faith, is set in a more contemplative and introspective manner, with the choir singing in unison for much of the movement. Overall, Stanford's Morning Service in C major is characterized by its rich harmonies, lush choral textures, and skillful use of organ accompaniment. The work is firmly rooted in the Anglican choral tradition, with nods to earlier composers such as Thomas Tallis and William Byrd, but also displays Stanford's own unique voice as a composer. It remains a popular choice for Anglican church choirs to this day.
