Der Obersteiger is an operetta composed by Carl Zeller, with a libretto by Moritz West and Ludwig Held. The operetta was first performed on January 5, 1894, at the Theater an der Wien in Vienna, Austria. The plot of the operetta revolves around the love story of a young miner named Toni and a wealthy countess named Marie. The story takes place in a small mining town in the Austrian Alps. Toni, a young and handsome miner, falls in love with Marie, a wealthy countess who is visiting the town. However, Marie's father, Count Zedlau, disapproves of their relationship and forbids them from seeing each other. To make matters worse, Toni's boss, the mine owner, also has his eye on Marie and tries to win her over. Despite the obstacles in their way, Toni and Marie continue to meet in secret. They are aided by Toni's friend, the Obersteiger (head miner), who helps them to communicate and arrange their meetings. However, their secret is eventually discovered, and they are forced to flee the town. The second act takes place in Vienna, where Toni and Marie have fled to start a new life together. However, they soon discover that life in the city is not as easy as they had hoped. Toni struggles to find work, and Marie's father is still determined to keep them apart. In the end, the couple is reunited with the help of the Obersteiger, who has traveled to Vienna to help them. The music of Der Obersteiger is characterized by its catchy melodies and lively dance rhythms. The operetta features several memorable songs, including "Sei nicht bös" ("Don't be angry"), "Ich bin die Christel von der Post" ("I am Christel from the post office"), and "Grüß euch Gott, alle miteinander" ("Greetings to you all"). Der Obersteiger was a popular success when it premiered in Vienna in 1894, and it has remained a beloved operetta in Austria and Germany ever since. Its enduring popularity is due in part to its charming story, memorable music, and colorful characters.
