"The Sorceress" is an opera in three acts composed by Pyotr Il'yich Tchaikovsky. The opera was composed in 1885 and premiered on November 18, 1887, at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, Russia. The libretto was written by Tchaikovsky's brother, Modest Tchaikovsky, based on a Russian fairy tale. The plot of the opera revolves around the character of Nastasya, a young girl who is kidnapped by a sorceress and taken to her enchanted garden. The sorceress, who is jealous of Nastasya's beauty, tries to keep her captive in the garden forever. However, Nastasya's lover, Prince Yuri, sets out to rescue her and defeat the sorceress. The first act of the opera takes place in a village where Nastasya and Prince Yuri live. The villagers are preparing for a festival, and Nastasya is chosen to be the queen of the festival. However, the sorceress appears and kidnaps Nastasya, taking her to her enchanted garden. In the second act, Prince Yuri sets out to rescue Nastasya. He meets a group of travelers who warn him about the dangers of the sorceress's garden. However, Prince Yuri is determined to save Nastasya and enters the garden. In the third act, Prince Yuri confronts the sorceress and defeats her with the help of a magic sword. He rescues Nastasya and they return to the village, where they are reunited with their friends and family. The music of "The Sorceress" is characterized by Tchaikovsky's use of Russian folk melodies and his skillful orchestration. The opera features several memorable arias and duets, including Nastasya's aria "Oh, how I long to see the light of day" and the duet between Prince Yuri and the sorceress "You are the queen of the enchanted garden." "The Sorceress" is considered one of Tchaikovsky's lesser-known operas, but it has been revived in recent years and is now performed more frequently. The opera's themes of love, jealousy, and magic continue to resonate with audiences today.
