Bach (BWV 1001-6), WoO 2' was composed in 1853. The work was premiered in Leipzig on December 1, 1853, with violinist Ferdinand David and Schumann himself at the piano. The work consists of six sonatas and partitas originally composed for solo violin by Johann Sebastian Bach, with Schumann's added piano accompaniment. The six pieces are BWV 1001-6, and each is divided into multiple movements. Schumann's piano accompaniment is not meant to overshadow Bach's original violin writing, but rather to enhance it. The piano part is often simple and supportive, providing a harmonic foundation for the violin. However, Schumann also takes the opportunity to add his own musical ideas, such as occasional countermelodies and variations on Bach's themes. The first sonata, BWV 1001, is in G minor and consists of four movements: Adagio, Fuga, Siciliana, and Presto. The second sonata, BWV 1002, is in A minor and also has four movements: Grave, Fuga, Andante, and Allegro. The third sonata, BWV 1003, is in C major and has four movements: Adagio, Fuga, Largo, and Allegro assai. The first partita, BWV 1004, is in B minor and consists of five movements: Allemanda, Double, Corrente, Double, Sarabande, Double, Tempo di Borea, and Double. The second partita, BWV 1005, is in D minor and has four movements: Allemanda, Corrente, Sarabande, and Giga. The final partita, BWV 1006, is in E major and has four movements: Preludio, Loure, Gavotte en Rondeau, and Menuet I and II. Overall, Schumann's 'Piano accompaniment to 6 violin sonatas and partitas by J.S. Bach' is a beautiful and respectful tribute to Bach's original works. Schumann's piano writing adds a new dimension to the pieces, while still allowing Bach's solo violin writing to shine. The work remains a popular choice for violinists and pianists alike.More....
