Kalevala Suite, Op. 23 is a composition by Finnish composer Uuno Klami. It was composed in 1933 and premiered on November 17, 1933, by the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Georg Schnéevoigt. The suite is based on the Finnish national epic, Kalevala, which is a collection of traditional Finnish folk poetry. The suite consists of four movements, each of which is inspired by a different story from the Kalevala. The first movement, "Lemminkäinen and the Maidens of Saari," is a lively and energetic piece that depicts the hero Lemminkäinen's attempt to win the love of the maidens of Saari. The second movement, "The Forging of the Sampo," is a more somber and mysterious piece that tells the story of the creation of the magical Sampo, a device that brings wealth and prosperity to its owner. The third movement, "The Capture of the Sampo," is a dramatic and intense piece that depicts the struggle between the hero Väinämöinen and the evil witch Louhi for control of the Sampo. The final movement, "The Return of Lemminkäinen," is a triumphant and joyful piece that celebrates the hero's return from the underworld. Klami's Kalevala Suite is characterized by its use of traditional Finnish folk melodies and rhythms, as well as its colorful orchestration and vivid storytelling. The suite is considered one of Klami's most important works and is widely regarded as a masterpiece of Finnish classical music.
