He was the youngest of three children and grew up in a musical family. His father was a choirmaster and his mother was a singer, and they both encouraged Rhoderick to pursue music from a young age. Rhoderick began his musical education at the age of six when he started taking piano lessons. He quickly showed a talent for music and began to excel in his studies. He also started singing in his father's choir and became a soloist at the age of 12. In 1957, Rhoderick was awarded a scholarship to study at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama in Cardiff. He studied piano, singing, and conducting, and graduated with honors in 1961. After graduation, he began his career as a professional musician, performing as a soloist and conductor with various orchestras and choirs throughout Wales. In 1963, Rhoderick was appointed as the conductor of the Welsh National Youth Choir. He held this position for 10 years and led the choir on several international tours, including performances in the United States, Canada, and Europe. During his tenure, the choir won several awards and became known for its high-quality performances. In 1973, Rhoderick was appointed as the conductor of the Welsh National Opera. He held this position for 15 years and led the company on several successful tours, including performances in the United States, Canada, and Japan. He also conducted several recordings for the company, including a critically acclaimed recording of Verdi's "Falstaff." Throughout his career, Rhoderick was also a prolific composer and arranger. He wrote several choral works, including "The Welshman's Song," which became a popular anthem in Wales. He also arranged several traditional Welsh folk songs for choir and orchestra, including "Ar Hyd y Nos" and "Men of Harlech." In addition to his work with the Welsh National Opera, Rhoderick was also a guest conductor with several other orchestras and choirs throughout the world. He conducted the London Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, among others. Rhoderick received several awards and honors throughout his career. In 1988, he was awarded the OBE (Order of the British Empire) for his services to music. In 1993, he was awarded the CBE (Commander of the British Empire) for his contributions to Welsh music. He was also awarded the Welsh Music Guild's Sir Geraint Evans Award in 1995. Rhoderick retired from his position as conductor of the Welsh National Opera in 1988 but continued to be active in the music community. He served as a judge for several music competitions and was a guest conductor for several orchestras and choirs. He also continued to compose and arrange music, and his works continued to be performed by choirs and orchestras throughout the world.
