The Theatre of Early Music is a Canadian classical music ensemble that specializes in performing music from the medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque periods. The group was founded in 1990 by Daniel Taylor, a countertenor and conductor who has become one of the most respected figures in early music. Taylor was born in 1972 in Ottawa, Canada, and began singing at a young age. He studied at the University of Toronto and the Royal Conservatory of Music, where he developed a deep interest in early music. In 1990, he founded the Theatre of Early Music with a group of like-minded musicians who shared his passion for the music of the past. The ensemble quickly gained a reputation for its innovative and engaging performances, which combined historical accuracy with a modern sensibility. The group's repertoire includes works by composers such as Bach, Handel, Monteverdi, and Purcell, as well as lesser-known figures from the early music canon. Over the years, the Theatre of Early Music has performed at some of the world's most prestigious venues, including Carnegie Hall, the Royal Albert Hall, and the Sydney Opera House. The group has also collaborated with some of the world's leading orchestras and conductors, including the New York Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and Sir Simon Rattle. One of the highlights of the Theatre of Early Music's career was its performance at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics, where the group performed a program of early music to a global audience of millions. The ensemble has also been featured on numerous recordings, including several critically acclaimed albums for the Sony Classical label. In addition to his work with the Theatre of Early Music, Daniel Taylor has also established himself as a leading soloist and conductor in the early music world. He has performed with many of the world's leading orchestras and conductors, and has recorded over 100 albums as a soloist and ensemble member. Taylor's contributions to the early music world have been recognized with numerous awards and honors. In 2006, he was awarded the Order of Canada, one of the country's highest civilian honors, for his contributions to the arts. He has also been awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal and the Prix Opus, among other honors. Today, the Theatre of Early Music continues to be one of the most respected and innovative ensembles in the early music world. With its commitment to historical accuracy and modern sensibility, the group has helped to bring the music of the past to new audiences around the world.
