Matti Hirvikangas is a Finnish classical guitarist who has gained international recognition for his virtuosic performances and innovative interpretations of classical guitar repertoire. Born on May 5, 1985, in Helsinki, Finland, Hirvikangas began playing the guitar at the age of six and quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument. Hirvikangas received his early musical training at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, where he studied with renowned guitarists Timo Korhonen and Jukka Savijoki. He later continued his studies at the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln in Germany, where he studied with the legendary guitarist Roberto Aussel. Throughout his career, Hirvikangas has been recognized for his exceptional musicianship and technical prowess. In 2007, he won first prize in the International Guitar Competition in Tampere, Finland, and in 2009, he was awarded the prestigious Finnish Guitarist of the Year award. Hirvikangas has performed extensively throughout Europe, Asia, and North America, appearing as a soloist with orchestras such as the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra. He has also given recitals at major concert halls and festivals, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the Wigmore Hall in London, and the Guitar Foundation of America Festival. One of Hirvikangas's most notable performances was his debut at the Berlin Philharmonic in 2012, where he performed Joaquín Rodrigo's Concierto de Aranjuez with the Berlin Philharmonic under the baton of Sir Simon Rattle. The performance was widely praised for Hirvikangas's sensitive interpretation of the piece and his virtuosic playing. In addition to his performances as a soloist, Hirvikangas is also an active chamber musician, collaborating with musicians such as cellist Jan-Erik Gustafsson and violinist Pekka Kuusisto.
